Tee Cotton Bowl XIII is more than a High School Football Game

by Jeff Fisher
High School Football America

Remember the old line from Dallas Cowboys fans that the hole in the roof of old Cowboys Stadium was so God can watch his favorite team?

How about the Pope blessing a Louisiana high school football game?

That's what Pope John Paul II did after watching an NFL Films 10-minute video on the Tee Cotton Bowl that turns thirteen years old on Friday when Ville Platte squares-off with Sacred Heart.

The Tee Cotton Bowl was founded in 1999 by Tim Fontenot, a physical therapist in Villa Platte.  Fontenot will join me on High School Football America Thursday night to talk about how the game has galvanized his racially divided Louisiana town of 8,000.

Ville Platte is a small town with strong Cajun and Creole roots where the news is still broadcast in French twice a day.  The schools are actually divided by a train track.

Ville Platte is the town's public school where the students are predominantly African-American and Protestant.  Sacred Heart is a private school with students that are predominantly Caucasian and Catholic.

The reason the game is called the Tee Cotton Bowl is "tee" in Cajun/Creole means small and the game is  named after college football's Cotton Bowl.  Ville Platte also has an annual cotton festival.

Fontenot's interview on High School Football America can be heard live on the ArtistFirst Worldwide Radio Network on the internet at 7 P.M. Eastern Time.

Curtis plants Plant

by Jeff Fisher
High School Football America

Courtesy MGhelmets.com
John Curtis carried the Louisiana high school football banner proudly as the Patriots pounded nationally-ranked Florida power Plant 33-3 in the Allstate Sugar Bowl Prep Classic in the Superdome.

JC took advantage of some sloppy play from the defending Florida 8A champs to get out to a 21-0 lead after just three offensive possessions by Plant.  Sherman Badie scored all three of the Patriots first touchdowns.

The John Curtis defense was very good, limiting Plant to 194 yards in total offense.

by Jeff Fisher
High School Football America

Neville's Defense Contains High Scoring Franklinton in Louisiana 4A Title Game

by Jeff Fisher

Franklinton's offense was shutdown for the first time this year, and it came at the worst time for Demon fans.

Neville (14-1) beat Franklinton 31-15 in Louisiana's 4A championship game Saturday which was the Demons first state title game appearance since 1981. Franklinton (14-1) came into the game having scored a state record 705 points this season.

The Times-Picayune reports that Neville quarterback Taylor Burch threw for over 300 yards and accounted for 392 yards in total offense. Included in those numbers was a Superdome Classic record 95-yard touchdown pass.

South Plaquemines Denied Three-Peat

by Jeff Fisher
High School Football America

The run of consecutive Louisiana state championships for South Plaquemines ended at two on Saturday. Haynesville won its 15th state title with a 19-12 win over the Hurricanes in the 1A championship game.

The Times-Picayune reports that South Plaquemines killed its attempt at a three-peat with a lot of penalties.

The story of the South Plaquemines High School football program grew after the release of New York Times writer Jere Longman's book on the Hurricanes that overcame all kinds of odds in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

John Curtis Streak of Louisiana State Football Championships Ends at 5

by Jeff Fisher
High School Football America

John Curtis' state championship numbers were staggering coming into the Patriots' 2A Louisiana high school football state championship game against Evangel Christian.

Five straight 2A titles, 14 straight championship game appearances and 30th in the last 35 years.

In the end, no of that mattered as Evangel Christian beat JC 18-13 Friday night. The loss snapped Curtis' 27-game win streak and 29-game playoff win streak. The Times-Picayune reports Evangel Christian's 12th state title came from a strong defensive effort.

Curtis has the most Louisiana state titles with 23. Haynesville is second with 14 titles (possibly 15 if it beats South Plaquemines on Saturday).

3A Champ Lutcher Ready For Round 2 Against 5A Champ Destrahan

by Jeff Fisher
The High School Football Huddle

At the end of August, defending 3A champ Lutcher stunned defending 5A champ Destrehan 25-0 in a jamboree. That game didn't count in the records, but may have been a sign of things to come.

Lutcher, which is now a 4A school, enters tomorrow night's showdown with Destrehan a perfect 4-0, while the Wildcats are 2-2. For more on tomorrow night's showdown, check-out the preview in The Times-Picayune by reporter Lori Lyons.
